GAS SAFETY

What does ‘immediately dangerous’ mean?

Immediately Dangerous is a formal gas-safety classification used when an installation or appliance presents an immediate danger to life or property if operated or left connected.

01

What the classification means

The engineer has identified a condition that creates an immediate risk. The appliance or installation should not be used until the danger has been removed and the work has been completed by a suitably qualified engineer.

02

What normally happens next

With the responsible person’s permission, the engineer will make the situation safe—normally by disconnecting the affected appliance or installation. Warning information is provided so nobody unknowingly uses it.

03

Repair or replacement

The remedy depends on the defect, appliance condition and availability of suitable parts. Atlas Gas explains the options and provides a quotation; safety action is never used to pressure a customer into an immediate purchase.

04

A real Low Fell example

During an annual service, Atlas Gas found severe combustion-chamber corrosion in an older boiler. It was classified Immediately Dangerous, made safe and later replaced with an efficient A-rated boiler after the options were discussed with the customer.

GAS EMERGENCY

Can you smell gas?

Do not use electrical switches or naked flames. Open doors and windows if it is safe to do so, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service.
